I have been both a medical provider and have had gastric sleeve surgery. I understands how desperate someone is to even consider bariatric surgery. Although my surgery was successful, so far, I has spoken with many family, friends, and patients whose surgery has failed and my heart aches for them. I understands how embarrassed, defeated, and humiliated they may feel.

Even though my surgery was successful in aiding me in losing weight, I realized that I was skinnier, but not healthier and set out to find a different approach than conventional medicine had to offer.

Being trained in and practicing conventional medicine, I have been skeptical of a functional health approach, but the more I studied about functional health, the more I realized that functional medicine is the approach that should be being used in all of health care.

Many people resort to bariatric surgery after trying every other possible thing to lose weight, only to be disappointed when they either do not lose much weight or gain the weight back. It seemed like our last resort and for many it did not work out as we had hoped.

Conventional medicine does not really evaluate the reason that people become overweight to begin with. Conventional medical providers are not trained to look for the cause of obesity, just to give medication and advice that is rarely effective in helping people lose weight and become healthy. A functional medicine approach looks for the underlying causes for weight gain with the goal of not weight loss, but restoring health.

There are many causes of weight gain. Rarely is someone overweight because they are undisciplined or weak.

Disruption of the normal gut biome, hormonal imbalances, toxins, allergies and food intolerances, genetic pre-disposition, stress and other things cause abnormal signaling to the brain to trigger food cravings.

A functional health approach may have prevented you from having to get to the point that bariatric surgery seemed like your only option.

Let's work together to find out what you need to become healthy.
